Do You Need A Tooth (Or Teeth) Removed?

Any reputable dental practice should do everything they can to fix a tooth prior to thinking about extracting it. At Dental Group NY, our acclaimed group of dentists and oral surgery experts are well-versed in corrective solutions such as crowns, bridges, and dental implants. Whenever possible, we will work with a patient to save and correct a tooth rather than extract it.

However, in some instances, it is unavoidable to have to extract a tooth. Such instances include situations where deep-lying infection has taken root in the jaw, or when overcrowding gets to the point of developing serious oral health complications. In situations such as these, tooth extractions are virtually unavoidable. Fortunately, the team at Dental Group NY in the Bronx and Hollis, NY, have decades of experience in tooth extractions and utilize state-of-the-art sedation to ensure that every procedure is as pain-free as possible for the patient.

Why Tooth Extractions Are Needed

There are many instances where it may be required to extract a tooth. Teeth must be extracted for the placement of dentures, for example, as well as for the surgical placement of dental implants. Teeth often need to be extracted as well after severe damage from impact trauma, wherein cosmetic solutions are not an option to restore proper aesthetics and functionality.

Outlining the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Process

There are dozens of variables that come into play when it comes to determining how a tooth is extracted. In a broad sense, however, there are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical. Simple extractions involve removing a fully formed tooth above the gumline, while a surgical extraction involves removing a tooth that has yet to emerge from the gums (i.e. wisdom teeth extractions).

Step 1: Sedation / Numbing

For any tooth extraction in the Bronx or Queens, the first step our team at Dental Group NY will take is to adequately numb and sedate the patient. This will allow for a seamless and nearly pain-free experience, and will ensure that healing takes place as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Step 2: Extraction

After numbing, typically the next step for Dr. Benjamin Katayev and our team at Dental Group NY is to widen the socket to provide access to the ligament – which is the structure that permanently anchors a tooth in place. Using specialized tools such as dental elevators and extraction forceps, Dr. Katayev will pull the tooth from the ligament and up and out of the socket.

Step 3: Recovery

After any tooth is removed, the open socket must be securely closed in order to prevent infection and recurring inflammation. This is typically done with simple stitches, after Dr. Katayev has thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the socket.
